Top 4 Alienware Laptops: A Quick Comparison

Alienware Area 51 m9750
$1,399.00

WHAT WE LIKED:
Enormous screen resolution! Twin SLI video cards produce incredible 3D graphics performance for a laptop. Fingerprint repelling finish on the casing is also a plus, as is the DVI and surround sound outputs.

WHAT WE DIDN"T LIKE:
No HDMI support available. Windows XP is required for best performance. Worst of all though is the poor battery however.

OVERALL RECOMMENDATION:
Although this is Alienware's foremost gaming desktop replacement, the cost adds up very quickly when extra components are added despite it's reasonable starting price. Great performance nonetheless for those willing to pay.

Spec Summary:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (1.66 GHz) | RAM: 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM | Weight: 8.6 lbs

Alienware Area 51 m17x
$1999-$6000!

WHAT WE LIKED:
Top quality components, fabulous design, and all around incredible performance. dual Nvidia GeForce 9800 GPUs may be overkill, but why not? Illuminated keyboard, 1TB hard drive, and Blue-ray drive are also nice bonuses.

WHAT WE DIDN"T LIKE:
The price.

OVERALL RECOMMENDATION:
If you've got cash and are eager to show off a lean, mean laptop, the Alienware Area-51 m17x is for you.

Spec Summary:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (2.1 GHz) | RAM: 1 GB DDR II SDRAM | Graphics: dual Nvidia GeForce 9800 GPUs | Weight: 10.5 lb

Alienware Area 51 m17
$1,999 (starts at $1,399)

WHAT WE LIKED:
Good balance of performance and price. Optional quad core CPUs and dual ATI GPUs are a plus.

WHAT WE DIDN"T LIKE:
Somewhat resembles the older, more awkward Alienware style. Basic laptop is affordable, but becomes very expensive as extra features are added.

OVERALL RECOMMENDATION:
Alienware chooses to combine a low starting price with the M17 with the option for powerful upgrades. Overall this makes for an imperfect solution for most users, although the option to include quad-coire CPUs and ATI CrossFireX video cards is appealing.

Spec Summary:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (2.26 GHz) | RAM: 3 GB DDR II SDRAM | Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD3870 | Weight: 9.5 lb

Alienware Area 51 m15x
$1099

WHAT WE LIKED:
Splendid performance, great 1,920x1,200 native resolution for a 15 inch display. The combine 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme X9000 CPU and Nvidia GeForce 8800 GPU are incredible topping the performance of other prominent high-end systems we've tested including the Dell XPS M1730 and the Gateway P-171XL FX.

WHAT WE DIDN"T LIKE:
The aesthetics are quite clunky and don't do the incredible insides justice. Also the $775 option for a 64GB solid state drive just doesn't make sense for such a large machine.

OVERALL RECOMMENDATION:
Buy. This laptop is incredibly powerful and provides reasonable bang for buck. For a serious gamer, the lack-lustre physical appearance of the machine is a small consession to make for the superb performance.

Spec Summary:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo (2.4 GHz) | RAM: 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM | Graphics: Nvidia's GeForce 8800M GTX | Weight: 7.1 lbs
